David Rabuka received a PhD in chemistry at the UC Berkeley as a Chevron Fellow in the lab of Carolyn Bertozzi. His research included developing and applying the SMARTagTM platform technology to cell surface modification. Prior to joining Bertozzi’s lab, David worked at the Burnham Institute synthesizing complex glycans followed by Optimer Pharmaceuticals, which he joined as an early employee, focused on the development of glycan and macrolide based antibiotics. He was CSO, President and co-founder of Redwood Bioscience where he developed novel protein conjugation methods and biotherapeutic applications such as antibody-drug conjugates. Redwood Bioscience was acquired by Catalent Pharma Solutions in Oct 2014, where David has continued to apply the SMARTagTM technology with various collaborators and partners as a Global Head of R&D. David graduated with a double honors BS in chemistry and biochemistry from the University of Saskatchewan, where he received the Dean’s Science Award, and holds an MS in chemistry from the University of Alberta. He is an author on over 45 major publications, as well as numerous book chapters and an inventor in over 30 patents.

His research interest is towards novel protein conjugation methods and biotherapeutic applications such as antibody-drug conjugates.

Thomas McKeon has received his PhD in Biochemistry at UC Berkeley with Postdoctoral Research in Plant Biochemistry at UC Davis. He has over 100 publications, mostly in Plant Lipid Enzymology and Molecular Biology. He is an Editor and author for the book chapter “Industrial Oil Crops”. He is an Editor for Biocatalysis and Agricultural Biotechnology (BAB), a Board Member for American Oil Chemists Society (AOCS) Biotechnology Division and International Society for Biocatalysis and Agricultural Biotechnology (ISBAB). He has organized conferences for ISBAB and for US-Japan Natural Resources (UJNR) Food and Agriculture Panel.

Sergey Suchkov, MD, PhD was born in 11.01.1957, a researcher-immunologist, a clinician, graduated from Astrakhan State Medical University, Russia, in 1980.Suchkov has been trained at the Institute for Medical Enzymology, The USSR Academy of Medical Sciences,National Center for Immunology (Russia), NIH, Bethesda, USA) and British Society for Immunology to cover 4 British university facilities. In 1995-2005, Suchkov was a Director of the Russian-American Program in Immunology of the Eye Diseases.Dr Suchkov is a member of EPMA (European Association of Predictive, Preventive and Personalized Medicine,Brussels-Bonn), a member of the NY Academy of Sciences, a member of the Editorial Boards for Open Journal of Immunology and others. Dr Suchkov is known as an author of the Concept of post-infectious clinical and immunological syndrome, co-author of a concept of abzymes and their impact into the pathogenesis of autuimmunity conditions, and as one of the pioneers in promoting the Concept of PPPM into a practical branch of health services.

lan Chet has completed his PhD in Microbiology at the Faculty of Agriculture of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Rehovot. He has published 390 articles, edited five books and holds 38 patents. He has served as a Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Vice President of the Hebrew University. Later, he was the President of the Weizmann Institute of Science and nominated “Institute Professor”. He was also a Visiting Professor at Harvard, Colorado State, Cornell, Rutgers and Lund Gottingen Universities. He was awarded with many prizes, among them, the Max-Planck, the Israel prize and the Wolf Prize. He has also received the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of Germany and the Legion of Honor of France. Furthermore, he was recognized with an Honorary Doctorate from Lund, Haifa and Naples Universities. He is a Member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the European Academy of Sciences and Academia Europea. He held the previous position of Deputy Secretary General at the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean.

His research concerns with the biological control of plant disease using environment-friendly microorganisms, focusing on the basic, applied, and biotechnological aspects of this field.

Dr Fernando de la Calle is currently the Head of the Microbiology Dpt. within Drug Discovery (R&D) at PharmaMar, biopharma involved in the development and commercialization of anticancer drugs of marine origin. He received his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from UAM (Madrid) in 1998. He also completed an Executive-MBA at IDE-CESEM (Madrid) in 2005. He has more than 25 years’ experience working in drug discovery from marine microorganisms. He is an Expert in Applied Biotechnology, Molecular characterization of Bacterial Biodiversity and the use of Biotechnology tools for Drug Discovery . M. A. Martin-Luengo graduated in Chemistry (UAM, Spain). In CSIC (Spain), she presented her Master work and her phD on supported catalysts, both with the highest qualification. As a Postdoctoral Grant Holder of the CSIC she worked in UK and Belgium. Afterwards she was granted a Fellowship IA to work with the SERC (UK) on Fischer Tropsch Processes. In 1992 she gained a permanent position of Research Scientist in the CSIC (Spain), where she has been working since. She has more than 100 publications, 120 congresses and several patents, an is member of the RSC, ACS and SECAT.

Nowadays she carries out studies in the search for more sustainable materials and chemical processes based on the valorisation of agriresidues, particularly important in less developed countries. This work has been acknowledged by the CSIC recently.

Vladimir P. Torchilin is a University Distinguished Professor and Director, Center for Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and Nanomedicine, Northeastern University, Boston. He graduated from the Moscow University with MS in Chemistry, and obtained there his Ph.D. and D.Sc. in Polymer Chemistry and Chemistry of Physiologically Active Compounds in 1971 and 1980, respectively. In 1991, Dr. Torchilin joined MGH/Harvard Medical School as the Head of Chemistry Program, Center for Imaging and Pharmaceutical Research, and Associate Professor of Radiology. Since 1998 Dr. Torchilin is with Northeastern University. He was the Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1998-2008. His research interests include drug delivery and targeting, pharmaceutical nanocarriers. He has published more than 350 original papers, more than 150 reviews and book chapters, wrote and edited 10 books, including Immobilized Enzymes in Medicine, Targeted Delivery of Imaging Agents, Liposomes, Nanoparticulates as Pharmaceutical Carriers, and holds more than 40 patents. He is Editor-in-Chief of Current Drug Discovery Technologies and of Drug Delivery and on the Editorial Boards of many journals, including Journal of Controlled Release (Review Editor), Bioconjugate Chemistry and Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews. Among many awards, Professor Torchilin was the recipient of the 1982 Lenin Prize in Science (the highest award in the USSR). He is a Member of European Academy of Sciences. Nikolai Zhelev a Molecular Cell Biologist and Professor of Medical Biotechnology. He also an Honorary Professor in eight universities in the UK, China, Bulgaria and Russia. His laboratory - which conducts research in drug development, cancer and cardiovascular systems biology and nanobiotechnology – has developed the first live-cell biosensor for monitoring activity on cancer targets in tumours. He has developed tiny human hearts - just 1 mm in diameter - which beat of their own accord. His TEDx Talk - How to break a thousand hearts - gives an insight into this research. He is also working with biopharmaceutical and biotech companies on the development of new drugs against cancer and cardiac hypertrophy. He have published three books, five book chapters and more than 90 research papers and patents in the field of DNA damage response, cell cycle regulation and drug discovery and development in oncology and cardiology. He is currently the President of the International BioDiscovery Federation and the Managing Editor of BioDiscovery – the first open access international scientific journal in the field of Life Sciences and Medicine in Scotland.

Molecular Cell Biologist and Medical Biotechnology

Mukesh Verma is Chief of the Epidemiology and Genomics Research Program's (EGRP) Methods and Technologies Branch (MTB), and oversees its research portfolio and initiatives that focus on methods to address epidemiologic data collection, study design and analysis, and to modify technological approaches developed in the context of other research endeavors for use as biomarkers and methods to understand cancer susceptibility. He is responsible for stimulating EGRP-funded research on epigenetic approaches in cancer epidemiology and has been instrumental in developing epigenetics research for NIH as a whole. Dr. Verma helped to develop a Request for Applications (RFA) on Environmental Influences on Epigenetics with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and represents the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS), in NIH's Roadmap Initiative on EpigeneticsExternal Web Site Policy. He helped develop an RFA on Comparative Systems Genetics of Cancer with NCI's Division of Cancer Biology (DCB), and is known within the extramural research community as an EGRP Program Director for Program Announcements (PAs) on Small Grants for Cancer Epidemiology and Pilot Studies in Pancreatic Cancer. He also organized a workshop to explore developing a concept for a research initiative on mitochondrial DNA and cancer epidemiology. Dr. Verma was, and continues to be, a co-Program Director for initiatives in gene-environment interactions in cancer etiology, including the Breast and Prostate Cancer and Hormone-Related Variants Cohort Consortium (BPC3), which is a collaborative project to pool data and biospecimens from a group of large prospective cancer epidemiology cohorts. Dr. Verma joined EGRP as a Program Director in 2004. In 2005, he was appointed Acting Chief of EGRP's former Analytic Epidemiology Research Branch (AERB). When EGRP reorganized in 2007, he was appointed Acting Chief of MTB and of the Host Susceptibility Factors Branch (HSFB), for which he served as Acting Chief through 2008. Before joining EGRP, he was a Program Director in NCI's Division of Cancer Prevention (DCP), where he worked in the areas of biomarkers, early detection, risk assessment, and prevention. He also was Coordinator of DCP's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Programs. He has published more than 25 papers in reputed journals and 4 patents related to Biometrics. He has participated in many international conferences related to Environmental Science, Photonics, Nuclear Science and Pattern Recognition. He has been lecturer of Biophysics at IE University.

Dr. Sadanand Dhekney is an Assistant Professor of Horticulture at the University of Wyoming. He received his PhD in Horticulture from the University of Florida with specialization in biotechnology of tropical and sub-tropical fruits. Dr. Dhekney’s current research at the University of Wyoming focusses on grapevine genetic improvement using precision breeding. His work involves discovery of genetic elements and genes from the grape genome and development of precision breeding technology for cultivar improvement. He has published 35 research papers, 50 abstracts and 8 book chapters and was a recepient of the 2013 Society for In Vitro Biology ‘Young scientist award’.

My program will utilize techniques in breeding and biotechnology along with improved management practices for expanding grapevine production in Wyoming. Screening Vitis germplasm for yield, quality and cold-hardiness, and evaluation of production systems for seedless grape cultivars in high tunnels will be a major focus area. Additionally, the program will also incorporate recent advances in grapevine genomics and biotechnology for improving abiotic stress tolerance of elite cultivars and rootstocks.

Dr. Maeda, M.D., Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Kumamoto University and Professor of Sojo University, Institute of Drug Delivery Science, is a world renowned expert in macromolecular therapeutics. He was successful in creating the world first polymeric drug, SMANCS (1979), which was approved for treatment of hepatoma in Japan in 1993. Along this line he discovered the concept of EPR (enhanced permeability and retention) effect of macromolecular drugs, a ubiquitous mechanism which is responsible for solid tumor selective targeting of polymeric drugs. More recently, he has developed a numbers of macromolecular/micellar drugs with very high tumor selective accumulation. This concept is also applicable to micellar and liposomal drugs, gene complexed nanoparticles, and even oncolytic virus particles. He received his Master’s Degree from the University of California at Davis, where he was a Fulbright Fellow, and his Ph.D. and M.D. from Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan. He has had more than 450 papers published in international reputed journals. He received the Princess Takamatsu Award in Cancer Research, Dr. Tomizo Yoshida Award the highest award from Japan Cancer Association in 2011, and other awards from various societies in USA, Germany, UK and Japan. He is an awardee of the 2016 Thomson Reuter Web of Science Citation Laureates in Chemistry division, top 3 in the world. Maeda’s paper in Cancer Research (1986) on the discovery of EPR effect is the most cited original article in that journal out of about 100,000 article (by AACR, Dr. Foti).

Mr. Muhammad Usman, Former Director General of Agricultural Research System, Government of Pakistan who retired from service after a spotless career of about 35 years with senior level experience on research and development of integrated agricultural production, industries and bioenergy on a sustainable way. Mr. Usman is basically an agricultural scientist with specialization of agricultural, food and biochemistry working on the yield and quality of various products and published several research papers. Mr. Usman is consider as the senior most scientist in the world, always participated in the international conferences as a keynote speech, renowned speaker, organizing committee member as well as moderator of the conferences around the world. Currently, is the Head of R&D Biofabrication Group at the Centre for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development – Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, Portugal. He is the Principal Investigator of “2bio4cartilage – Integrated intervention program for prevention and treatment of cartilage lesions; POCI-01-0145-FEDER-023423 co-financed COMPETE2020 under PT2020 programme, and supported by FEDER”, and his research activity focuses, mostly, on products and processes engineering, aiming to bringing the gap between the lab and in vivo applications. In the last years, he has been invited to collaborate in several national and international projects, providing a significant income for the Biofabrication Group (currently has 8 grant-holders). Despite his young age, he has co-edited books, authored and co-authored more than 200 scientific works, is member of the scientific committees in various conferences, member of the Advisory Board on TERM for Cambridge Scholars Publishing, and editorial member and reviewer of various journals.
